There is a lot of history attached to this one old book.

1. The object in the first place of this book - to collect, condense, and collate information relative to all varieties of fruit, and dispense the same among the people.
2. The book was given by the Corresponding Secretary of the Indiana State Horticultural Society, W. H. Ragan (a woodcut of his likeness is on the frontspiece) to John G. Heinl (b. 1844 - d. 1920).
3. John G. Heinl then donated this book to the Central Labor Union, 203 S. 5th St., Terre Haute, Indiana. (His signature is on a donation bookplate inside front cover).
4. John G. Heinl and his brother in 1863 established probably the oldest flower shop in Indiana, The Heinl's Flower Shop. Originally located at 8th & Cherry St., Terre Haute, Indiana, it was relocated to its present location at 7th & Walnut St., Terre Haute, Indiana in 1903.
5. John G. Heinl maybe remembered more because of his dog, "Stiffy Green", than anything else.
