In 1894, several small breweries united to create the Evansville Brewing Association. After prohibition it was renamed Sterling Brewers, Inc. They produced many different brands with Sterling Beer being their flagship beer.
In 1968 Sterling Brewers, Inc. merged with the Associated Brewing Co. of Michigan. Name was changed to Sterling Brewers Association.
In 1972, G. Heileman brewery of LaCrosse, Wisconsin bought the brewery.
